Paul Vasterling, Artistic Director, Nashville Ballet, says:
“Ballet: Tango was inspired by my first ever trip to Argentina in 1999, when I was astounded by the skill and beauty of the Argentine tango, and the cultural influences from which tango music and dance came.

The work is a ballet, meaning it uses the classical ballet vocabulary in a contemporary way to reflect the essence and flavor of the tango dance and music--not only specific movements, but more importantly, for example, the tragedy and ultimate sadness that exists in the music, the struggle for power between the partners in the dance, (but with the ultimate victory) of the man, and the role of women in the culture of tango music and dance."
